How waterproof is the thatch? This largely depends on the pitch of the roof. The extent to which the products are waterproof vary:
-
The Modular Thatch is 100% waterproof when correctly installed and at a minimum pitch of 45º.
-
The Thatch Tiles are approximately 98% waterproof at a pitch of 30º or more.
-
The Brustics Brushwood panels will shed the majority of water; however when they become saturated, they will let some water through.
-
Is a building consent required? Generally any permanent building which covers an area of greater than 10m2 requires a building consent. Other criteria can also be relevant. Regulations can vary from Council to Council, so if in any doubt you should contact your local Council.
-
How does the Thatch Roofing perform in high wind zones? The Brustics Brushwood panels have been tested and approved for use in cyclonic conditions in Northern Australia. The thatch tiles are popular in many resort areas which are subject to cyclonic conditions; they have performed well compared to many other products, the principal reason for this being they allow the wind to filter through. The 45° pitch of the modular thatch assists in reducing damage from high winds.
-
How flammable are the thatch roofs? The thatch tiles and modular thatch can be treated with a fire retardant, which is designed to minimise the spread of flames. The Brustics Brushwood is a very hard wood (so hard that fire retardants cannot penetrate it) and the panels are very tightly packed; this reduces the likelihood of a fire establishing itself.
